Let's aim for January...

Hi everyone,

Sounds like it'll be best to change the project due date to January. I'm still finishing up a promo illustration due by end of the year, so I plan to develop my Inundated idea after that.

Thanks for checking in -

Page Size and Page Count
Hi everyone,

Just want to clarify the size and page formats...please correct me if I'm wrong:

Size:
A5
(14.81 x 20.99 cm)
(5.83 x 8.26")

Page count:
5 pages per artist

Full color, full bleed

+ cover art to be divided/collaborated among all of us

would still love to finish the book, I just want to double-check that
this is indeed the size/pages that we agreed on -

thanks,

Progress - checking in!

Hi everyone,

I feel like I've been out-of-the-loop lately, so I just wanted to say hi and see how everyone's doing!

Are we all still on-track to finish the artwork for the book by Dec. 1?

What about cover art? Any other internal pages? Or should those wait until we have all the other artwork in-hand?

I can manage it if everyone else will be ready by then, but I don't want to knock myself out if I don't have to... :) I'm working on a little 5-page wordless narrative, although the fourth page is giving me some grief. Will post sketches when I have a chance to scan them in...

Re: Inundated: The Theme

I wanted to make sure Adam's awesome reply to my post soliciting thoughts on the theme got some notice, since it's bumped off the first page:

The feeling I get from "inundated," is one of hopelessness/helplessness. In the state of being inundated, there seems to be no past or future. There is just that yearning for help or change, and the stream of negative thinking that keeps your mind tangled in anxiety.

In the case of a house literally flooded by water, and a family stranded, it's hard to imagine that the past was even real. All the strong memories of sitting around the house or coming home, seem ancient because water has completely hidden them from sight. It's humbling in a way, because it just goes to show you how things can change in the blink of an eye.

At least with the literal definition of Inundated, there is physical destruction around that is visible to everyone. When someone is emotionally flooded and their mind is in a jumble, it's hard for other people to see what the person is going through.

What is a nice follow up to inundated, is the part that happens after the storm. When an island gets new growth after a fire wipes out all vegetation, or a person meets a new friend. These are things that remind you life goes on and you have to keep going with it, like a 'hole in one' for golf. It's that promise that hope does exist. Hooray! Without the struggle however, it would be hard to really appreciate the hooray.

My own take on the word inundated — aside from the literal meanings of being flooded — is a feeling of being overwhelmed with a force completely outside of your control. One can be just as easily overwhelmed with positive things (I can relate to this all too well right now) as with negative ones, as much with physical events as will mental/emotional/social issues. A true inundation likely involves all of the above. It can be a slow build or a sudden deluge, it may even be partly of one's own creation blown completely out of one's control, but this is raw chaos at work. And while chaos can be dangerous it's rarely evil in and of itself.

Floods are a powerful sign in the mythology of any culture. When treated symbolically they usually signify a need for change so great and at such a deep level that total upheaval is the only way to make a clean start. Time to clear the board and start over fresh. Such times are a true test of our mettle: we can't stop the floodwaters, whether they're real or symbolic. We can only control how we will react to them: will we capsize and flounder, or we will ride through the chaos... and what will we do on the other side?

Other thoughts?

The Team - Introductions - Adam Schechter

Hi everyone. I am just starting out with art as a career. I graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 07' and currently reside in NJ. I consider myself to be more towards the fine art side of art, but I am just learning what it is like to try to make a living doing it. I take commissions for artwork here and there, and I have had one small showing of my work since I graduated. In order to keep my boat afloat I paint houses and do various home improvement jobs; I'm self-employed . I am building up a body of artwork, which I have to decide what to do with. Either I am applying to grad school with it, or I am sending slides off to galleries to see if I can get a show. Truely, I just want to travel and sketch everything. I keep a sketch journal, which is my most important possession.

Making this book should be a great experience. Most of my work starts in my sketch journal, and I am looking for ways of translating it to another form. I typically take the sketches and work them into larger paintings, but making a book has been on my mind for a while.
